TACKLING COMMON INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
ESSENTIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
These installations require a specific level of expertise; attempting this task without the guidance of a professional may lead to safety risks and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you confirm that you have understood and accepted the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios detailed below exemplify various challenges I have encountered during installations, which may relate to your own experiences and offer helpful solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: ADDRESSING UNEVEN SURFACES
RESOLVING THE CHALLENGE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the appropriate size for the gate and any required extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- After obtaining the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to accurately cut the gate, adhering to the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you plan to eliminate and insert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure a proper fit for the tension knob.
- You will find this process clearer once you have the gate in hand.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
ADDRESSING THE ISSUE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are prepped for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are fully completed and the gate has been tested for stability.
NAVIGATING INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTSIDE
While installing baby gates outdoors may seem like a quick and economical solution, it can potentially void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend that outdoor installations of baby gates be viewed as a temporary and cost-effective option. This could risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor conditions due to potential exposure to harsh weather.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failure to comply with warranty stipulations will result in the loss of warranty coverage.
For a sustainable solution, consider engaging a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. While this may incur higher costs, it represents the most effective approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR APPLICATION:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they are designed to prolong the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly lower the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture accumulation, adhere to these guidelines:
-
- Prior to installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover all surface areas, including the base.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate with an 8mm steel drill bit. This will facilitate water drainage and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture can gather at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to prevent moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, which is available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Apply Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g to the affected areas, following the product instructions.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
