French Drain Solutions: Effective Runoff Management in Shellharbour

Addressing Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a serious and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, positioned at a higher elevation, began to flow into the garden and penetrate beneath the foundation of the house. This unwelcome intrusion caused damage to the flooring, promoted rising damp, and resulted in mould growth within the property, jeopardising the integrity of recent renovations.

How Do You Determine the Origin of Water Ingress?

The issue arose from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the rear and side gardens of neighbouring properties. Without an effective drainage system to intercept this influx, the water was forced to flow underneath the house.

Developing a Comprehensive Drainage Solution

CS Plumbing designed and implemented a gravity-fed French drain system specifically aimed at capturing and redirecting water before it could impact the foundation of the home.

The project comprised several critical elements:

  • A French drain system meticulously crafted to gather surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, directing it through gravity into a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, equipped with strategically drilled holes to facilitate efficient discharge.
  • Three newly installed, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes that replaced the original smaller pipes, linked to new 100mm PVC piping leading to the curb.
  • A retaining wall system constructed along the boundary, using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to create a robust barrier to hold back the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient removal of soil on-site, aided by a dumper for streamlined site management.

What Effective Measures Can You Implement for Water Management?

The newly established drainage system now proficiently captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is diverted away from the home. This solution offers the homeowner a durable, low-maintenance option that protects their foundation, flooring, and the investment made in renovations.
